The crowd reaction was loud enough that people outside the auditorium came in to see what had happened.</p>
<p>Footage of the demonstration exists and has been widely circulated. What the footage doesn’t explain is how it works, which is the more interesting question.</p>
<h2>What the One-Inch Punch Actually Is</h2>
<p>The one-inch punch is a striking technique drawn from <a href="/wing-chun-vs-jeet-kune-do/"><a href="https://www.allbrucelee.com/wing-chun-vs-jeet-kune-do/">Wing Chun</a></a>, the southern Chinese <a href="https://www.allbrucelee.com/jeet-kune-do-philosophy-principles/">martial art</a> Bruce studied under Ip Man in Hong Kong. In Wing Chun it is called a “sun punch” or short-range vertical punch, and it is designed to generate power in close quarters where a full wind-up is not possible.</p>
<p>The one-inch designation refers to the distance between the fist and the target at the moment of initiation. The strike has to produce significant force despite having almost no travel distance, which eliminates momentum as a primary power source and requires the body to generate force through a different mechanism entirely.</p>
